Charles Hoge has been drawn to the practice of Taiji and internal arts since his teens, and he still approaches the art as a lifelong student. Of the many teachers he has studied with over more than four decades, some of the most influential include his mother Jeanne Hoge, who was a student of Master Li Pen Fang in Taiwan in the 1960s (108 Yang long form); Master Yu Ji Yuan, a disciple of Fu Zhongwen and former head coach of the Shanghai Wushu team (85 Yang long form); Grandmaster Dong Jin Kim (Japanese JuJutsu; Charles received a 1st degree black belt); Thong Nguyen (natural movement, dance, practical martial arts); and Sifu Adam Mizner (37 Yang Form, Huang Sheng Shyan version and more). Charles is also an U.S. Army veteran with service in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a physician, is a leading expert on the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, and authored Once a Warrior—Always a Warrior, a self-help book for combat veterans.
For the past eight years, Charles has taught Yang Taiji under Sifu Mizner’s system. Charles’ teaching style is relaxed, approachable, and individualized. His classes are anchored in the fundamentals of movement and Taiji classics, making the material accessible to beginners as well as advanced practitioners and teachers.
